chile roasting

Make space in your freezer because green chile season is here. Order a 25-pound (raw) case—or two or three—of roasted medium and/or hot organic chiles by filling out a form at the Co+op’s customer service desk. Roasting will be done on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Members pay $34.99 per case; non-members pay $39.99. Roasted chile is also available in the produce section of the store on a first-come-first-serve basis for $2.99 per pound.

The Co-op’s green chile comes from Seco Spice in Berino, New Mexico, which is located in the Hatch Valley between Las Cruces and El Paso. Produce Manager Leonda Clendenen worked with the Co-op Distribution Center to bring it to LACM for a reasonable price and time (likely through August). Clendenen also spent time at La Montañita Co-op in Albuquerque perfecting the art of roasting our state vegetable. “I enjoy learning to roast green chile,” says Clendenen, who as born and raised in New Mexico. “The tradition connects me to the heritage of the state.”
