Food For Thought
NEWSLETTER OF THE LOS ALAMOS COOPERATIVE MARKET  (JULY 2013)
Greetings!

Summer is in full swing and monsoon season is providing needed relief to the once parched landscape and fields. At the Co+op, we are gearing up for harvest season, and you can find classes, local food, and more at your local Co+op!

Our regular hours are Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Summer fun at the Co+op!

Monsoons welcomed the Co+op Gordon's Concert on July 5. In spite of the dreary wet weather, many music loving people ventured out to enjoy the funky Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band and the other accompanying activities. The band instantly stirred the audience to approach the stage and groove to the music in their own ways.

In addition to music, Son-Shine Art sold locally made humming bird feeders, and Valynn Purvis, owner of NM Party to Go, put smiles, sparkles and color on many faces through face painting. Our staff showed their enthusiasm for the Co+op by getting the Co+op logo painted on their arms. Go Co+op!

Inside the store, we welcomed first-timers to the Co+op, who seemed excited to learn about our mission and products. Music can bring people together to dance, learn and build a hunger for good, local food.

We were happy to host a Gordon's Summer Concert at the Co+op, and we look forward to future opportunities to bring fun, funk, and flavor together.
Local Spotlight: Sierra Vista Farm, Velarde

I spent a recent morning with Tim Martinez, owner of Sierra Vista Farm in Velarde. Tim has been providing produce to the Co+op from the time we opened, and it is a pleasure to do business with him. His farm is small but jam-packed with a large variety of crops.

Right now, you can find Tim's organically grown zucchini, sweet onions, summer squash, carrots, radishes, and spring onions on our shelves and look for his tomatoes, sweet corn, and green chile as the summer rolls on.

Unfortunately, Tim's peach, cherry and apple trees were a bust this year, but he was excited to show me his newly expanded vineyard. His green table grapes were a hit at the Co-op last year and this spring he decided to dedicate a large portion of his farm to not only table grapes but wine grapes as well. His plan is to build a barrel house and make his own wine. Anybody up for a wine dinner at the Co+op?

Thanks for shopping local and buying organic!

Co+op Coloring Contest & Wildlife Center Support.
coloring contest winners summer 2013

We wanted to thank everyone who participated in our coloring contest! The competition was fierce, and as always our Co+op kids big and small got to show their colors! Our prizes were all sourced locally either from distributors found in our own Co+op or from CB FOX kids. Our Co+op makes fruit and vegetable donations twice weekly to the Espanola Wildlife Center, this week we included a small monetary donation as part of the prizes awarded to our contest place holders. We LOVE having you all bring joy, creativity and color into our Co+op, so please continue to color! Thank you!

Coming Soon: New Website and Newsletter Format

As member of a cooperative business that links over 100 food co-ops (the National Cooperative Grocer's Association, NCGA), we will be the first co-op to implement a new co+brand. This change will allow us to further utilize the resources available from NCGA as well as set a standard for the "co-op experience," which will help give a clear message for food co-ops and bring awareness to the cooperative business model.

The new website and newsletter will roll out soon!

Thank you for supporting your local co-op!

Thank you for support.

Sincerely,

New Garden Coordinator!
We are excited to announce Nicole Kliebert is the New Hoop House Coordinator.  She has already brought the raised beds to life with herbs and vegetables, which will be used in the Co+op or for youth education.

Funds raised in the Greenhouse Fundraiser Project at the Co+op were used in part to purchase supplies for the educational hoop house.  These funds will also be used to provide education opportunities for our community in the coming year. Thank you for supporting the Co+op.

Co+op's First Hummingbird Feeder
Donated by Sallye Sibbitt
Sallye Sibbitt is helping us build a cooperative environment outside the Co+op by donating a hummingbird feeder. Promoting environmental health is part of our bottom line, and we are thrilled to be seeing the occasional hummingbird frequent the feeder. Now you can bird watch from our portal while you enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the Co+op.

Free Organic Soil!

We still have soil left over from building the educational hoop house raised beds.  Please take it and put it to use! Thank you.
