Food For Thought

We are halfway through our Annual Survey Month, and our 2nd Anniversary is around the corner. This is a great time to shop at the co-op and enjoy the extra savings or learn how to prepare some different foods with our Shop with the Chef classes.  Teens and young adults can attend our free music and art event tomorrow at Warehouse 21 to see local artists and have fun.

Our regular hours are Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

If you have not filled out the survey yet, then you still have time. Please take a moment to fill out the survey and bring it back to the Co-op by February 28 and receive a discount coupon* for your effort, which can be used anytime during this month.

Spend $75 to $174.99        Save 15%

Spend $175 or more           Save 20%

*The coupon expires on March 1, 2013. The discount only applies to regular priced items, and we do not compound discounts.

Please help us save trees and click here for the Electronic Survey.
Limit: One survey and discount per household.

The Co-op uses the survey to assess our performance in several areas including customer satisfaction, communication, and to gain insight into our member's shopping pattern and demographics. We also use that information to communicate to co-op stakeholders how well we as an organization adhere to our Customer Service policy as well as the mission and vision of the co-op. These reports are presented to the Board in March and April and published on the website once approved/accepted by the Board of Directors.

Farewell to Phil and Gloria,
Welcome Back Matt!

The Co-op has gone through some changes this past month when our original produce manager Phil Kearney resigned to move to Taos where his wife has taken a position with the State of New Mexico. Phil was instrumental in our initial success by being able to apply his knowledge of produce and department management right from the start of our co-op. We'll certainly miss his enthusiasm for locally grown produce and other foods. Filling his shoes is former grocery manager Matt Dreier. Matt left us back in May 2012 to join his wife who took a job in Missouri. Apparently the pull of New Mexico was too great, and we hired Matt to take over the duties in our Produce Department on February 11. We welcome Matt back and look forward to having his enthusiasm for the Co-op and produce result in new and exciting displays, deals and levels of customer service.

Gloria Brehm, our finance manager from day one, has also resigned. Gloria started her own arts & craft supply retail store in White Rock called Perch Paperie. Gloria was here before we opened, learning the reporting requirements of a co-op store and setting up systems to assure proper accounting and cash controls. Gloria also served in an human resources function. We have begun the process to fill the accounting position and will use our CPA Lorraine Hartway to assure that the transition will go smooth and without any detriment to the operations.

Best of luck to both Phil and Gloria in their new endeavors!    ~Steve, GM

New Co-op Beer Pairing Format

On February 7, Blue Heron Brewery and the Co-op rolled out a new beer pairing format: beer and cheese paring with the biggest change, no seating room! This social, standing room only, event allowed for more interaction than the seated format and was well received by attendees. This lighter format is also cheaper than the five course meal, and allows for us to host these type of events more frequently. Our first beer and cheese paring event featured 4 beers and a hard cider from Blue Heron Brewery, which was paired with co-op cheeses. Of the cheeses, the soft Delice de Bourgogne Triple Cream Cheese made the biggest impression, and would be a great choice for your next social event.

We will also be testing out a different format in April with a wine paring class by Vivac winery; however, we will continue to hold our full scale 5 course beer dinners. The next beer dinner will be held in May. Look for more information on these events and more in our next newsletter.
